UPDATED CRITERIA FOR ENHANCED SAFEGUARDING OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

UPDATE: Today, the IRCC has unveiled a series of crucial and vital adjustments aimed at strengthening the financial readiness of international students pursuing their dreams in Canada.

Below are the key changes announced today by The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

  • The new requirement mandates international students to demonstrate a minimum of $20,635 when coming to Canada. Notably, the cost-of-living standard has remained static since the early 2000s, resulting in instances where students faced financial strain upon their arrival. This alteration ensures a more realistic financial foundation for students embarking on their academic endeavors.
  • Extending the waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit for off-campus work rights is also a positive development. The extension, until April 30, 2024, allows international students currently in Canada and those who submitted study permit applications by December 7, 2023, to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week. The ongoing evaluation of this policy includes exploring future options, such as potentially increasing off-campus work hours for international students to 30 hours per week while classes are in session. This decision provides students with increased flexibility in managing their finances amidst the challenges posed by the rising cost of living.

International students play a central role in Canada’s social, cultural, and economic tapestry. These updates underscore a commitment to addressing vulnerabilities within the International Student Program, fostering a more supportive environment for all students in Canada.
